At the Natural Clinic, we use natural approaches to tackling the common root causes of neck pain: muscular tension, strain, poor posture, and stress. The following two approaches are complementary, and so can be used either separately or together to reduce and eliminate neck pain.
A large-scale randomised controlled study published in the ‘Annals of Medicine’ in 2015 found that the Alexander Technique relieved chronic neck pain. The average patient in this study suffered from chronic neck pain for six years and found significant long-term relief — when a follow-up was conducted 15-months later, the patients were still pain-free. The Alexander Technique works by showing you how to let go of any excess tension so that you can release neck stiffness and relieve any pain that may be caused by this strain. It also shows you how to move and operate differently in your life to reduce tension and strain. Read more here.
Osteopathy uses a wide range of gentle manipulation to reduce muscular tension in the neck and improve movement in the joints of the neck and upper back. This can include gently massaging the soft tissues or rhythmically “rocking” the joints to release tension. Treatment is different in every individual and sometimes it might involve treating other areas in the back and shoulders as well as the neck. Read more here
