I have noticed that since I moved to the natural clinic, a professional clinic in the heart of Cork city my clients are happier. I think having a clinic in Cork with Nutritional Therapy, Osteopathy, acupuncture and therapists who work with stress, fatigue, sleep, hormones and mood disorders works for them and gives them a choice.

This week I saw clients who had originally come to me for depression, sinus issues and joint pain. Out of 10 each of them had marked their symptoms above 7 out of 10 (10 being the worst possible).

On their second or in 1 case 3rd visit they were all below 3 out of 10 in the space of 1-2 months. They may have needed more than 1 therapy at the same time but it worked brilliantly. Part of The Natural Clinics ethos is to do only what the clients need and no more and to work together to give the clients a natural choice for healthcare in Cork.

The lack of control over your health can bring anyone down and leave them feeling helpless and dependant on others who may or may not have the time and resources to really help.

The new style of complimentary and holistic therapist that works at The Natural Clinic has the knowledge to help you to help yourself and empower you to work with your body’s natural systems of repair and healing.

That feels so good so no wonder there are so many happy clients around the clinic these days. Some have said it is a relief to feel there is an alternative. That is what I wanted to offer Cork, a place to go when you are ready to try a more natural approach.

Well not quickly anyway. Just add foods to your snacks and meals every day that help rid your body of the toxins that you eat or drink every day.

Your body works hard these days. We have more toxins in our foods, water and environment to deal with than than a couple of generations ago and we are not consuming enough foods that help rid us of these on a daily basis. Doing a 3 or 5 day detox if done correctly is helpful in getting rid of stored toxins but it is also an extra strain on the body and especially the already overworked liver.

However adding foods to your diet every day can slowly, safely and over time much more effectively keep your detoxification system healthier and working better for you with every meal.

It’s so easy to add some specific foods and drinks to your daily routine that you’ll hardly know your doing good until you start to feel the results. From breakfast to an evening snack you can have specific vegetables, spices and teas with what you are already preparing. These foods are available in your supermarket and you may already be eating them regularly but if you know which ones to choose from you can make sure they are there working to help rid you of toxins.

Tea is a default liquid in Ireland. We drink a lot of it every day but if one or two cups of tea are replaced with a good (maybe even loose leaf) green tea then you are increasing your levels of antioxidants. 2 cups a day is plenty to have a positive effect. We are not trying to do anything fast here so more than that can put more pressure on your detoxification system. There is caffeine in green tea so having it early in the day is best.

We consume broccoli regularly enough but I see my clients only having it once or twice a week. 3 to 4 times a week would be great as it helps rid the liver of toxins and even excess hormones. It can easily be added to stir fries, stews, roasted, boiled or eaten raw. Give it a good wash and if you can why not go organic. The less toxins in then the less we have to detox.

Asparagus is easy to buy and cook. It goes great with anything and even on it’s own with some spices and olive oil it tastes great and is a major liver detoxifier.

Turmeric is a yellow coloured spice that gives indian food it’s colour and some of it’s flavour. This has many health promoting benefits alongside detoxification but a pinch a day is plenty and is easy to add to stir fry’s, stews and roasts and it goes great with cumin and ginger.

One other factor we often forget about is water. It’s not as simple as grabbing a glass at the sink as even is our relatively clean country the water can be too full of some minerals like molybdenum. It can be better to just ask yourself how much you are drinking and if it is less than two litres a day (besides teas etc.,) then it could have a daily advantage to have a glass or two of spring or mineral water to bring you up to that amount.

One factor to keep in mind is that most vegetables and fruits help us to detoxify in one way or another. I often ask my clients to have up to half of their plates filled with vegetables and that a quarter of the plate be a green vegetable. If that is not attainable every day then try it a few days a week. I’ve seen just that have good to amazing effects on people ability to keep the toxin levels in their bodies to a minimum. since most of my clients are chronically ill I see these changes as even more amazing.

We have a lot of pressure on our body every day. Make it an every day habit to help it stay healthy.

Don’t forget! Exercise moderately for 20 mins every day can have a huge effect too. Movement is our bodies most effective way of moving the toxins out of our lymph system.

If your life is full of foods and other items that cause an imbalance of your hormones it would be very difficult for anyone, even someone on what is considered a relatively “normal” healthy diet to maintain fertility.

Years ago I heard the term Endocrine Disruptors (hormone Disruptors). It was new to me and others in the field at the time but in the last few years it is something I talk about with my clients almost every day especially if they are trying to conceive.

A body needs balance to maintain fertility. Too much or too little of any particular hormone begins a cascade of imbalance with other hormones in the body including the systems that are involved in fertility.

Can we do anything about that, you bet we can but it involves some dietary and lifestyle changes. I like to use the quote from Henry Ford when it comes to changes of this nature “If you always do what you’ve always done then you’ll always get what you always got”.

It’s no coincidence that infertility is on the rise in western civilization. One factor is the rise in stress levels.

There is a hormone that is elevated when we are under pressure or stressed, when we eat foods that are high in refined or processed carbohydrates and sugars or when we take some forms of medicine. Modern living for most people involves varying degrees of stress that raises the levels of the adrenal hormone Cortisol in our bodies. If this particular hormone is imbalanced then it effects many of our other hormones including oestrogen and testosterone.

It’s clear that reducing stress then can help to balance hormones but a reduction in hormone disruptors is important too.

What are the major hormone disruptors,

Meats;

We eat meat significantly more meat than generations before us did. Animals contain their own natural hormones that we are consuming when we eat them. The more meat we eat the more of the animals hormones can have an effect on our hormones. A small chicken breast size of meat a day is actually enough animal protein for an adult to remain healthy and you can also eat more vegetable protein in your diet with beans and legumes as well as some grains like quinoa. Consider having a few vegetarian meals a week.

Dairy;

Milk is full of the cows own hormones too. Foods like cheese, butter and then a few cups of tea or a bowl or two of cereal containing milk can have a minimal daily effect that can add up to a larger effect long term on our hormonal system. You could mix it up a little by trying almond, hazelnut or oat milk alternately.

Plastics;

Plastics contain a specific ingredient known as BPA (Bisphenol A) as well as other chemicals associated with oestrogen receptor disruption. This chemical can be found in many plastics like water bottles, canned goods (used to line the inside of the can), packaged foods, flame retardant chemicals and more. Drinking from glass bottles and decreasing the amount of canned food you eat may decrease the amount of BPA in your life.

Pesticides;

The chemicals used in pesticides have many compounds that are associated with hormone disruption. This doesn’t mean eating only organic food but eating more organically grown vegetables can certainly reduce the effects of the non organic foods you do eat.

There are foods that help detoxify excess hormones from the liver too. Indole-3-Carbinol is an enzyme that helps to break down hormones in the liver so they can easily be transported to the digestive tract and out of the body. Cruciferous vegetables contain significant quantities of this enzyme. Cruciferous foods are broccoli and cauliflower and all green leafy foods including cabbage, spinach and lettuce.

Household cleaners;

The huge list of chemicals in your average household cleaner can certainly have an effect on your hormones if they are absorbed through the skin or breathed in regularly. There are safer brands available in some health stores and supermarkets and it is worth considering a little research into some natural homemade cleaners.

The list continues but the 5 types of hormone disruptors above are the ones we can have some control over by making some different choices in the supermarket, food market or wholefood store. Doing this and reducing stress or increasing our relaxation periods all work together to make a difference.

There are many other changes that can be made via diet but they are more specific to an individuals current diet and lifestyle in the second part of www.realenergyprogram.com where you can learn more about the hormone system in the body, become a member of The Real Energy Program, book and appointment or contact me directly.

Not many people know that Gluten can become an opiate in an unhealthy Gut. Working with chronic fatigue so much over the last few years has had me seeing more than my fair share of poorly functioning digestive systems. Bloating, fermenting yeasts, food sensitivities, inflammation, IBS and more are a daily symptom for most of my CFS clients.
At the same time I see many cognitive function issues. Poor memory or forgetfulness being the main symptoms but low mood and anxiety are also commonly present.
If a poorly functioning Digestive system has the large and difficult to digest gluten protein introduced it can convert it to an opiate known as glutea-MORPHINE that easily passes through the blood brain barrier. This morphogenic opiate is a neurotoxin and has a pretty long list of neurological issues associated with it.
So make Gluten toast but do it carefully and with the help of an expert, me :-). There is plenty of information for Chronic Fatigue or generally fatigued people on my website www.realenergyprogram.com
