Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage is used in the treatment of pain, strain and tension. It works by reducing or alleviating tension and strain, releasing ‘knots’ in the muscles. While other massages are more ‘surface level’, deep tissue massage is meant to truly work deeply into the tissues. What you feel at the end of a session is relief, ease and freedom in the muscles and joints. Deep tissue massage will speed up the healing in damaged muscle tissues, release tension, and allievate pains and aches in your muscles and joints.
What is Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage uses specific, targeted pressure that goes deeper into the muscle tissue. By working through and manipulating the different layers of muscle tissue, as well as the connective tissues, we help to encourage a full extension, relaxation and freeing of tension patterns. Because the pressure works deeply into the tissues, it helps to free up your lymphatic system. This releases any toxins that have built up in the muscle. For this reason, we recommend drinking plenty of water after a treatment to encourage your system to flush out these toxins.
Is Deep Tissue Massage Painful?
Depending on what is going on in your body, you may experience pain. The techniques used will physically break up muscular scar tissue, “knots”, and areas of hard, rigid tissue known as ‘adhesions’. These issues need to be addressed as they impact your body’s circulation, limit your full range of motion, and cause inflammation and pain.
Lighter pressure is first used. This helps soften and warm up the muscles. It also gives your therapist a chance to get a sense for the problematic areas. From there, specific techniques are applied. These include a deep, gliding pressure along the length of the muscles. This deep, gluiding motion is known as Stripping. Stripping is usually done using the elbow, forearm, knuckles, and thumbs. The other approach used applies pressure to release adhesions and free up the muscle fibres. This is called Friction.
