What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of vibrational medicine originating in Japan. It brings balance and harmony to the energetic field surrounding the body, as well as the physical body itself. The word ‘Reiki’ can roughly be translated as ‘Universal Life Force Energy’. The practitioner has learnt how to become a channel for this energy, which they then transfer to client through their hands.

How Does Reiki Work?

We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

For me, one of the simplest and best descriptions of what Reiki does is that is clears away the clutter caused by stress so we can see a positive way forward. A Reiki session is an opportunity for you to re-connect with yourself.

What to expect from a Reiki treatment

We will start with a consultation to clarify what you are looking for from the treatment e.g. which aspect of your overall health you are seeking support for. You can also ask any questions you may have. After this you get to just lie down on the massage table, switch off and receive this wonderful healing energy. I will cover you with a blanket and make sure you are comfortable so you can fully relax.

In some parts of the session I will be touching your physical body, and at other times I will be working at a small distance from the body, depending on what it required. Beginning at the crown of the head I will work my way down towards your feet, spending time on the areas that need extra attention. Whether I am working at distance from your body, or physically touching you, I will always be respectful of your personal space.

As you receive the Reiki energy you may experience sensations such as heat, cold, tingling, a sense of energy moving through different parts of your body. You may experience an emotional shift or release, or suddenly receive insight regarding a solution to a problem that was troubling you. You may also feel nothing, and that is perfectly ok, the healing is still occurring on unconscious levels and you may just have to trust me on that! The more Reiki sessions you receive, the more you strongly will begin to sense it. The most consistent feelings that clients report are of deep relaxation, feeling lighter, calmer and clearer.

Many Reiki sessions take place in silence (with gentle music in the background) as the client just enjoys the deep relaxation that Reiki induces, and may even fall asleep. Other sessions will be more interactive as the client may be moved to talk through particular issues that arise in order to help release the emotional charge around them.

My own intention as a Reiki practitioner is to be as present, sensitive, respectful and responsive as I can be, honouring what is needed in the moment. My approach is strongly informed by my Buddhist meditation practice, which strengthens my ability to stay compassionately present with whatever arises. If I feel that a client would benefit from also receiving other forms of support, I will not hesitate to refer them to one of my colleagues here at the clinic.

How Does Reiki Work?

We are alive because life force (known as ki, chi, or prana in other traditions) is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy, sometimes called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The flow of life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings (‘Where the mind goes, energy flows’). It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative beliefs about ourselves and the world. These thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force.

(For example, let’s say Fred has low self-esteem. The negative beliefs he has about himself cause a disruption in his energy field. Eventually, this disruption causes his shoulders to slouch forward in an unconscious attempt to protect his heart. In the view of Reiki, the disruption in the energy field happens first, and manifests as dysfunction in the physical body at a later stage).

Testimonial for Reiki sessions

‘Rosi is an amazing Reiki practitioner. I felt at ease from the second I walked in the door. I usually find it takes me a while to open up to therapists, but with Rosi I found it effortless because of  her non-judgmental and compassionate presence. I could feel a lot shifting during the session and I felt comfortable allowing it to happen as Rosi is a very competent and discerning healer, which allowed me to trust her completely.  I had experienced cysts and fibroids, which were affecting my menstrual cycle. It was ‘blocked’ and a session with Rosi, it had cleared. I am so grateful! The physical aspect, is only a fraction of what Rosi helped me with, she is a powerful  catalyst for change!”

About Me

I trained as a Holistic Therapist (Massage, Reflexology and Aromatherapy) back in 2005, after being inspired by a life-changing reflexology treatment I received when I was an extremely stressed trainee teacher in London! I did not practice professionally straight away, as my main calling at that time was to work as a teacher for young adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

However, I always maintained a keen interest in all matters relating to health, wellbeing and spirituality. I explored and experienced many different modalities and approaches – you name it, I’ve probably tried it.

One of the main ‘driver’s’ for my healing journey has been the need to find ways to manage being a ‘highly sensitive person’ in a very over-stimulating world.  After fearing for many years that I was condemned to a life of overwhelm, it was a great relief when I eventually find out there was a name for me! (For more information on high sensory sensitivity see Elaine Aron’s pioneering work: http://hsperson.com/ ). This information was so crucial for me that I now have a special interest in working with people who are highly sensitive/ highly empathic (approximately 1 in 5 people). My aim is to help them understand and care for their nervous systems, so that they learn to experience their sensitivity as a gift as opposed to a burden, and express those gifts in the world. Sensitive people – the world needs you! (Urgently).

My journey has also been strongly informed by Buddhist philosophy and practice, and my long-standing involvement with the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (now called Triratna).

Creative expression is also a huge passion of mine, and has been a huge source of solace and healing for me. In my view, everybody is an artist in one way or another, and our lives are immeasurably enriched when we allow ourselves to play, make, dance, invent, experiment, and explore. My sister and I are currently collaborating on a series of children’s books and I am due to begin recording my second album of original songs in spring 2018 . . . and I am NO stranger to the dance floor. (If you would like to receive my monthly blog – full of uplifting, empowering and often humorous messages –  drop me a line and I’ll sign you up. rosilalor@gmail.com )

In 2014 I met a wonderful teacher called Roseleen McNally (based in Blackrock, Dublin), and was inspired by her presence to train to become a Reiki Master and a Magnified Healing practitioner. I felt like ‘a duck to water’ when it came to working with these subtle yet powerful energies, and only wished I had found them sooner! The effects on all aspects of my life have been transformational and profound.

When offering a space for healing, my intention is to support my clients to return to an optimal state of health and happiness, through re-connecting to their own innate wisdom. It brings me joy to see people suddenly find solutions where they could see none before, to watch them realise that there is always at least one little step they can take towards greater balance, freedom and fulfilment. It’s truly an honour for me to do to this work.
