Could You Have a Dairy Intolerance?

Dairy Intolerance

While dairy is often considered an important part of your diet in order to meet your daily requirement of calcium and protein, negative reactions are quite common — in fact, dairy is one of the most common food intolerances. Dairy intolerance is one of the major culprits but is also one of the ones we are able to identify in our food intolerance test

Symptoms of Dairy Intolerance

There are a few common reactions to dairy which can help you narrow down if this is indeed the issue.

Bodily Aches

“Dairy sensitivity can surface in a wide variety of ways since about 80% of our immune system is in our gut,” advises Diane Sanfilippo, certified nutrition consultant and bestselling author of Practical Paleo over email with Bustle. “This means that anything that irritates our digestion may impact nearly any other normal body function and cause things to go haywire,” Sanfilippo adds. Sometimes dairy can be a trigger for stomach upset.

Acne or Hives

If you notice hives, cut dairy out of your diet and see if it returns to normal. This includes milk, cheese, and yogurt, but also various processed foods.

The elimination of dairy can lead to cleaner, clearer skin.

Headache

Migraines and headaches are common responses to dairy.

Seasonal Allergies

Dairy can exacerbate seasonal allergy symptoms in people. The best way to find out if you are one of them is to cut out dairy for 14 days, then before you reintroduce it, consider food intolerance testing.

Bodily Odours

Eliminating dairy can remove unpleasant bodily odours.

Skin Rash

Consuming dairy can lead to skin rashes and irritation.

Abnormal Bowel Movements

Abnormal bowel movements such as constipation, diarrhea, and gas, are often due to dairy intolerance. If you notice these symptoms, consider eliminating dairy.

Bloating

Feeling bloated after meals? It could be due to what you’re eating.  Dairy can be problematic for gas and digestion and can lead to water retention. Feel bloated after your morning yogurt or cereal? Try switching to eggs.

Breathing Issues

Breathing problems such as wheezing can happen when someone has a sensitivity to dairy.
